报告人简介:
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Mateus Batistella graduated in Biology at the University of São Paulo (USP) and in Philosophy at the Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC). He has a master degree in Ecology from the University of São Paulo and a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Environmental Science from Indiana University (USA). As a researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), he works with geotechnologies, landscape ecology, and land-use planning, coordinating projects in various Brazilian sites. Mateus is also a professor at University of Campinas and a visiting scholar at the University of Minnesota, USA.
Abstract:
The Brazilian large territory, its ecological and agricultural diversity, the spatial dynamics and temporal variability in land use and land cover, and the lack of detailed information about the country’s agrarian structure creates huge challenges for land change assessments. On the other hand, geotechnology provides real opportunities due to the growing number of sensors and products, greater data availability and precision, reduction of product costs, and national demands for the integration of geospatial information in management systems to support public policies. Among the factors that influence a territory’s capacity for agricultural production are the potential land available and the way it is cultivated respecting both the law and the environmental limitations. As one of the world’s main agricultural powers, the knowledge about the Brazilian territory provided by geoinformation is the basis for promoting a new development model in order to minimize negative environmental and social impacts resulting from human activity. This presentation will show a series of initiatives led by Embrapa with focus on themes with relevance for agriculture and the environment in Brazil. In particular, recent work on forest degradation and transition will be emphasized.
